THE DAILY SCOOP – The WSOP Welcomes Badugi

- Posted Under The Daily SCOOP
In the fascinating world of card games, poker stands tall with its vibrant variants and its intricate blend of skill, strategy, and the unpredictability of luck. As enthusiasts and aficionados across the globe continue to delve into the depths of poker’s captivating ecosystem, they often encounter unique game forms that bring a refreshing change from the conventional. Today, we turn our attention to one such intriguing variant—Badugi.
Originating from the beautiful lands of South Korea, Badugi, pronounced ‘Bah-doo-gee,’ is a poker variant that slowly but surely carved a distinctive niche in the global poker community. What sets Badugi apart from traditional poker games is it’s core premise—it isn’t a game about securing high pairs or flushes; rather, it’s a contest where the lowest cards come out on top, and no two cards in your hand should share the same suit or rank.
As an intriguing mix of traditional poker’s thrill combined with the strategy of lowball, Badugi offers a different kind of poker experience, a departure from the conventional variants such as Texas Hold’em and Omaha. This South Korean game, which has been a regular inclusion in mixed game rotations for over a decade, poses a compelling challenge even for the most seasoned poker players, with its unique gameplay and rules.
Before diving into a game of Badugi, it’s crucial for players to understand its rules and gameplay mechanics. A standard Badugi game consists of four betting rounds, and players have three opportunities, termed ‘draws,’ to improve their hand. The game begins with the dealer dealing each player four hole cards.
The action begins with the first round of betting, which occurs immediately after the deal. Next up is the drawing phase. Here, players are given an option to discard any number of their cards, even all four, to improve their hand, an opportunity that adds a layer of strategy to the game. Each draw is followed by another round of betting, and this process continues until the final betting round ensues after the third and final draw.
