PLAYER PROFILE – Liv Boeree

April 3, 2024 3 min Read

Liv Boeree came to poker through a TV show, stayed long enough to become one of the most decorated players of her generation, then walked away to do something else entirely. The astrophysics degree, the heavy metal guitar, the philanthropy work — she’s never fitted the standard template, and her poker career reflected that.

A Stellar Beginning: Astrophysics Meets Metal Music

Born and raised in Kent, England, Boeree earned a degree in Physics and Astrophysics at the University of Manchester while playing lead guitar in metal bands on the side. The analytical and creative combination turned out to be a reasonable fit for poker, though that wasn’t the plan at the time.

How She Got Into Poker

She applied to a TV show called Ultimatepoker.com Showdown on a whim — the advertisement was vague enough that she wasn’t entirely sure what she was signing up for. Once selected, she was matched with Phil Hellmuth, Annie Duke, and Dave Ulliott as mentors. The math behind the game, the psychological reads, the strategic layers — it mapped onto how her mind already worked. That combination doesn’t happen with everyone who tries poker; for Boeree it clicked immediately.

Rising to Poker Prominence

The results came fast. She won the 2008 Ladbrokes European Ladies Championships and kept building. The real breakthrough was the 2010 European Poker Tour in Sanremo — beating a field of over 1,240 players for €1,250,000. She was only the third woman to win an EPT title at that point. In a field that was still overwhelmingly male, that number meant something.

Tournament Record

Her tournament record covers the range. A 2017 World Series of Poker Tag Team Championship alongside Igor Kurganov. Runner-up at the 2014 UKIPT Edinburgh Main Event. Third at the EPT Barcelona High Roller. The mix of formats and stakes tells you something — she wasn’t a one-trick specialist. The results kept coming across different structures.

Empowering Others Through Philanthropy

Beyond the poker table, Boeree’s impact is felt in her commitment to philanthropy and effective altruism. Co-founding Raising for Effective Giving (REG), she has championed the cause of using evidence and reason to determine the most effective ways to help others. Through REG, Boeree has mobilized the poker community and beyond to contribute towards solving some of the world’s most pressing issues, reflecting her belief in the power of strategic thinking for global betterment.

Life After Professional Poker

In 2019, she stepped away from professional poker. The focus shifted to education, public speaking, and applying the same rational decision-making principles she’d developed at the table — just in different contexts. She was already involved in the effective altruism world through REG, and that work expanded. The through-line from astrophysics to poker to global advocacy is an unusual one, but there’s a consistent logic to it if you’re looking for it.

The Bigger Picture

Boeree’s career is unusual in that the poker part may not end up being the most consequential thing she’s done. REG has moved serious money toward effective charities, and her work since stepping away from the tables has put her in front of audiences well outside the poker world. She came in through an unlikely door, won at the highest level, and found a use for the skills that had nothing to do with cards.
