MORE Poker Movies Every Enthusiast Should Watch

Our first ten poker movies covered the famous ones. This second batch is where it gets more interesting: the hidden gems and underrated classics, the films that never drew Rounders-sized audiences but got something true about the game on screen anyway. The mix runs from Old West comedies to gritty 70s character studies to documentaries about the online boom, and a few of them, frankly, deserve more of a reputation than they have.
Fair warning: more than one of these will make you want to learn poker properly before the credits roll. Consider that part of the appeal.
“A Big Hand for the Little Lady” (1966)
A comedic western film, “A Big Hand for the Little Lady” sets its poker game in the Old West. The plot revolves around a family man who loses his entire fortune in a high-stakes poker game, and his seemingly naive wife, played by Joanne Woodward, who decides to step in to continue the game in his place. The movie masterfully blends elements of comedy, suspense, and poker, resulting in a charming and enjoyable cinematic experience. Even though it’s not centered around modern poker, it gives viewers an entertaining glimpse into how poker was played in a bygone era.

“Maverick” (1994)
“Maverick,” starring Mel Gibson, Jodie Foster, and James Garner, is an adventurous comedy-western. The plot follows Bret Maverick (Gibson), a charming poker player who needs a small fortune to enter a major poker tournament. The movie is filled with poker games, con games, and unexpected twists, making it a fun watch. While the poker scenes might not be as intense or strategic as other films on our list, “Maverick” successfully captures the adventurous spirit of the game in the Wild West setting.
“All In: The Poker Movie” (2009)
The documentary of the bunch. “All In: The Poker Movie” charts how one of our oldest games hit a full-blown renaissance in the 2000s, and why it stuck as a pastime and a passion, through interviews with professional poker players, historians, and enthusiasts. If the question of how poker went from smoky backrooms to televised main events interests you at all, this is the film that answers it.
“California Split” (1974)
Directed by Robert Altman, this one follows two gamblers through the highs and lows of their poker adventures. It’s a gritty, realistic portrayal of gambling addiction, friendship, and the pursuit of the elusive big win, set against the backdrop of 1970s poker scenes.

“The Sting” (1973)
A tale of con artists in the 1930s, this Oscar-winning film features Paul Newman and Robert Redford in a complex plot involving the poker game 5-card Draw. The movie is celebrated for its clever storytelling, the charisma of its leads, and its thrilling portrayal of high-stakes deception.
“The Card Counter” (2021)
A gripping drama that tells the story of a former military interrogator turned gambler haunted by the ghosts of his past. As he navigates the world of casino poker, the film explores themes of redemption and revenge, and it treats the strategy of the game with more respect than most thrillers bother to.
“Runner Runner” (2013)
Set in the world of online poker, this thriller stars Justin Timberlake as a college student who cracks an online poker game, only to get drawn into the corrupt world of the site’s wealthy owner, played by Ben Affleck. It’s a fast-paced tale that unravels the darker side of the online poker industry, filled with intrigue, betrayal, and high-stakes games.

“Shade” (2003)
A crime thriller set in the underground poker world, “Shade” focuses on a group of grifters looking to score big. Starring Sylvester Stallone and Gabriel Byrne, the film is known for its slick portrayal of card mechanics, intense poker scenes, and the shady side of gambling hustles.
“Bet Raise Fold” (2013)
This documentary provides an in-depth look into the world of online poker. It chronicles the rise and fall of the internet poker industry during the poker boom in the early 2000s, offering personal stories from professional online poker players. The film gives insight into the challenges and successes faced by these players, making it a compelling watch for anyone interested in the modern era of poker.
“Poker King” (2009)
A Hong Kong comedy-drama that revolves around the world of competitive poker. The story follows two rival poker players vying for the title of “Poker King.” This film stands out for its blend of humor and drama, along with a genuine interest in the strategies and skills involved in high-stakes poker. It offers a unique perspective on the game, particularly within the context of Asian gambling culture. “Poker King” is known for its entertaining portrayal of the complexities and psychological aspects of poker, making it a noteworthy addition to the genre.

Enjoy the Show!
What strikes me about this batch is the range. The same card game carries a Joanne Woodward comedy from 1966, a Robert Altman character study, a Justin Timberlake thriller, and two documentaries about the online boom, and it never feels like the same subject twice. That’s the thing about poker on film: the cards are only ever the excuse. The real material is the people holding them. Queue a few of these up and see which one stays with you; my money’s on the Altman.
