PLAYER PROFILE – Lyle Berman
Lyle Arnold Berman has spent six decades wearing two very different hats: corporate executive and professional poker player, building a legacy that carries real weight in both the boardroom and at the poker table, and few names cross between the two industries as fully as his. Born August 6, 1941, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Berman went on to become a business tycoon and a poker master, leaving his mark on corporate boardrooms and the poker tables of Las Vegas alike.
From Leather to Leisure
A young Lyle, having attended the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania from 1959 to 1961, later graduated from the University of Minnesota with a degree in business administration in 1964. It wasn’t long before he joined the family business, Berman Buckskin, a name synonymous with quality leather products. But Lyle was not content with leather. He had a vision to expand and diversify, one that would eventually carry the Berman name into restaurants, casinos, and professional poker.
Under his stewardship, the company blossomed, metamorphosing into Wilsons Leather, a brand that became a household name with 27 outlets to its credit. Lyle’s business ventures soon expanded from leather into restaurants and retail, where he led the Rainforest Cafe chain as the chairman and CEO, merging restaurant and retail shopping with an environmental flair including live birds and lush plants.
In 1990, Lyle co-founded Grand Casinos, a venture that aimed to bring the glitter and glamour of gambling establishments to places beyond Las Vegas and Atlantic City, opening its first casino in Hinckley, Minnesota, in 1991. Grand Casinos also controlled the Stratosphere in Las Vegas from 1994 to 1998, before losing it to Carl Icahn in bankruptcy proceedings; that same year, Fortune named Grand Casinos America’s fastest-growing company. Lyle later became the CEO of Lakes Entertainment, the company’s Native American casino gaming spinoff, which merged with Golden Gaming in 2015 to form Golden Entertainment, where Berman remains a board member and major shareholder; his stake in the company was valued at roughly $40 million as of 2017.
The Poker Prodigy
Lyle Berman earned three World Series of Poker (WSOP) bracelets: the 1989 $1,500 Limit Omaha event, the 1992 $2,500 No-Limit Hold’em event, and the 1994 $5,000 No-Limit 2-7 Draw event. His best WSOP Main Event finish came in 1989, when he placed 5th for $67,950, and he also finished 5th in the $50,000 H.O.R.S.E. Championship in 2008 for $444,000, one of the largest cashes of his career. He also reached the semifinals of the 2005 National Heads-Up Poker Championship, falling to eventual champion Phil Hellmuth. He recorded his first live tournament cash in 1983 and his last in 2017.
Berman’s induction into the Poker Hall of Fame in 2002 recognized decades spent across high-stakes cash games and major tournaments, and he has earned over $2,600,000 in live poker tournaments during his career. Away from his own results, he also backed fellow pro T.J. Cloutier, who finished runner-up in the 2000 WSOP Main Event while playing on Berman’s backing, one of the more notable staking arrangements of that era.
Berman’s biggest impact on the game came off the felt. In 2001, he partnered with television producer Steve Lipscomb to co-found the World Poker Tour, backing the hole-card camera format that turned poker into a television spectacle and helped ignite the 2000s poker boom. The tour’s first season aired in 2003, and Berman served as WPT chairman for years afterward, receiving the tour’s Honors Award in 2018 for his contributions to the game.

Lyle Berman turned his dual career into a book, co-authoring “I’m All In: Lyle Berman and the Birth of the World Poker Tour,” an autobiography spanning his life across both business and poker.
From his childhood to his business ventures and poker career, the book draws on decades of opinions, experiences, and anecdotes from both worlds he helped shape.
The Legend Continues
In 2017, Berman moved into an entirely new arena, forming Black Ridge Acquisition Corp, which went on to acquire Allied Esports International and WPT Enterprises in 2018, bringing the tour he had helped launch nearly two decades earlier back under his control. He served as co-chairman of Allied Esports Entertainment and briefly as its interim CEO in 2022, more than three decades after he first sat down at a WSOP table, still finding new ways to stay in the game.
